Another Opening, Another Show...
By the time you read this the DCBA will have hosted the sold-out 2007 performance of its annual musical, Judge’s Nite; the homage to passive-aggressive bench-bar relations that began as a small, amateurish, experiment 30-odd years ago and has mellowed with each succeeding performance like fine wine. It is too early to tell whether this year’s vintage has degenerated into mean-spirited ridicule or hit the bright notes of parody: but I have high hopes. And while a number of veterans have left the show, this year we have been graced by a flurry of bright-eyed new participants with prodigious talent. And speaking of talent; it was not long ago that I myself sat in hushed reverence of the 2005 Judge’s Nite cast (the very people who volunteer their time selflessly at the Bar Association) and was inspired at once to throw my hat into the ring. Those of you who saw last year’s performance will remember me as Judge Burke, George Wendt, and panicky lawyer #2 (my breakout role). This year I’ve returned a tad more seasoned and, to my own surprise, a bit of an "insider" by comparison with the newer cast members.
So with Judge’s Nite 2007 in the can (that’s showbiz talk), I thought I would throw out a few ideas for next year’s production. Not that director/writer Kevin Millon and writer/musical director Patrick "Skippy" Hurley will want to change things in 2008, but just in case they want to try something funny next year I have some suggestions. DISCLAIMER: To complain about that last comment feel free to send an e-mail, or to berate me in person schedule an appointment with my office by calling 1-900-bad-tast (the "e" is silent). And now, without further adieu (that’s comic misuse of language), some thoughts for next year:
Wheaton Legal
Theme: A rag-tag group of legal aid lawyers struggles against the man in DuPage County, only to find that the man is actually Chief Judge Anne Jorgensen. Hilarity ensues.
Catch Phrase: I’ll get those charges dropped faster than you can say "illegal search and seizure"
Songs: Meat Loaf, Smiths, Led Zeppelin, Beastie Boys, AC/DC
Finale: Kid Rock performs "Cowboy" at the DuPage County Judicial Complex.
The Big O’Bama
Theme: Chicago’s very own Junior Senator turns on the charm, turns out the vote, and turns DuPage County upside down on his way to Washington. Hilarity ensues.
Catch Phrase: I’ve been in politics for almost 2 years. Am I President yet?
Songs: 80’s rock, techno (Jam on it, Pump up the Volume), punk rock.
Finale: A reunited AHA! sings "Take on Me" at the bar association.
Scenes from a Courthouse
Theme: 3 cases, 3 back-stories, 6 lawyers, 1 judge. Cases take place in real time in a single courtroom and hallway. Hilarity ensues.
Catch Phrase: I’m out of order? You’re out of order! This whole system’s out of order!
Songs: Jethro Tull, Jim Carroll Band ("People who Lied")
Finale: Theme to "Justice for All" over a montage of laughing characters.
