As someone who has been on the Publication Board for years, I have been looking forward to introducing myself and writing about how much I appreciate the opportunity to serve as editor of the Brief. So guess what? I’m a week late with this piece and still haven’t written anything worth publishing. Or anything at all actually. Not the best way to start my editorial stewardship. No, too many 10¢ words; it doesn’t even sound sincere even though I really am grateful for the opportunity to be the editor and have worked hard these past few years to try to improve the state of things at the Brief. Not to mention writing for various publications including this one. So how about this:

No, too obsequious (10¢ word again). I come across as desperate for acceptance. Of course as the outsider here in clubby DuPage County I am desperate for acceptance. I also have a history of incredibly bad first impressions. My best friends didn’t like me when they met me. My teachers didn’t like me when they met me. So let me see … I could go with a joke to break the ice:
A lawyer is hit by a car. A police officer comes by and shouts "oh no, your hand was torn off by that driver!" The lawyer looks at where his left hand used to be and screams – "my Rolex!"
Sorry, humor is not my strong suit. Now where were we? Oh yes. How about a kind of Hugh Hefner at the Grotto, talk-show thing:
Tonight we’ll be talking to President Glenn Gaffney about his upcoming term and ask whether the rumors are true: are Vice President Fred Spitzzeri and 2nd Vice President Tom "Iron Man" Else plotting to overthrow his fledgling regime and rule as "Co-Presidents for Life?" We’ll also find out once and for all who has the best legs among members of the DCBA office staff! Join us, won’t you?
Oh, who am I kidding? I would look like a moron in a smoking jacket. All that velvet makes me nervous – I’m afraid I’ll break into a spontaneous Frank Sinatra medley at any moment. I don’t even smoke a pipe.
I was hoping it wouldn’t come to this but you forced me to be completely honest. If you don’t accept me after this there’s no hope:
I want to thank each and every person at the Bar Association, the Executive Committee, and the Publication Board, for allowing me to associate with such a distinguished and hard-working group of writers, editors, and legal thinkers. I hope that I can be as good at my job as you all have been at yours these past few years. I know that I will do my best.
Well I’m no John Pcolinski but it will have to do. Now let’s have a great year and make the Brief as stellar as we all know it can be.
